Key Personnel

Maureen R. Lyden, M.S. - President and Chief Executive Officer

Maureen R. Lyden, M.S. founded BioStat International, Inc. in 1994 with an extensive background in biostatistical analysis in pharmaceutical, biotechnical and medical device clinical research. Ms. Lyden has obtained an extensive knowledge of biostatistics from the academic and industry points of view.
Prior to establishing BSI, Inc. Ms. Lyden was the Manager, Clinical and Statistical Affairs at Bausch and Lomb Pharmaceutical Division and responsible for conducting clinical trials for regulatory product approval, study design, SAS programming, database management, statistical services: customer survey analysis, product stability analysis, and analytical critique of manufacturing validation and product development studies.

Ms. Lyden received her M. S. in Statistics from Rutgers University and has a B.S. in Zoology. After completing her Master of Science Ms. Lyden managed clinical biostatics and clinical data system positions of increasing responsibility at several pharmaceutical and medical device companies including Biogen, Inc., Parexel International, Technomed International and Bard Vascular Systems.
During her leadership, BSI has grown to be a company serving the industry with dedication to quality, personal attention, support, commitment, and cost effectiveness in many therapeutic areas such as ophthalmics, orthopedics, diabetes, IVD devices, enzyme deficiency, analgesics, and more. BSI staff supports clients from statistical consulting to full-service CRO commitment.

Zhihong (Jenny) Jelsovsky, MPH, MS, MA - Manager, Biostatistics and Data Processing

Ms. Jelsovsky joined BSI, Inc. in 2003 from the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, College of Public Health at the University of South Florida, where she was also a graduate research assistant and a graduate teaching assistant.
Research projects included statistical neurotoxicity risk assessments sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), lung cancer and trauma categorical data and survival analyses. Teaching projects include College Algebra, Business Calculus and Introductory Statistics. Previously, she was an Instructor/Professor of statistics, calculus I & II, R, C, Fortran, BASIC and mathematical modeling at the College of Science, Chongquing University, China.
Ms. Jelsovsky will receive her Ph.D. in Biostatistics (expected 2011), and has completed her M.P.H. in Biostatistics and M.A. in Statistics all from the University of South Florida; an M.S. in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics both from the Chongquing University, China.

Since joining BSI Ms. Jelsovsky has managed the BSI Biostatistics Department, and now currently has oversight over the processing of CRF data in-house and statistical review of data collection. She is Team Leader of the BSI Institute. The Institute provides introductory statistical training to research professionals and allows for BSI statisticians to participate in statistical research projects in such areas as Bayesian methodology, epidemiology and genomic research. She has been the primary statisitical analyst and consultant on a large outcomes study in diabetes.



Susanne C. Panzera, B.S., CCRA. - Manager, Clinical & Quality Affairs

Ms. Panzera has been working with BSI, Inc. since 1999 initially as a Clinical Research Associate (CRA) on medical device clinical studies. In 2003, she was promoted to Manager, of Clinical and Quality Affairs.
Her current responsibilities include clinical project management, clinical auditing, implementing and maintaining standard operating and working procedures to maintain company and regulatory compliance, and developing quality assurance systems and processes.Prior to joining BSI, Inc. Ms. Panzera was an independent clinical research consultant, conducting clinical monitoring activities for a variety of medical device products including ophthalmic laser corrective surgery, orthopedic shockwave therapy, ablation catheters, insulin pumps, spinal implants and wound management dressings. Ms. Panzera also worked for Critikon, Inc. a Johnson & Johnson Company for over 18 years in the Research and Development arena where she served in a variety of positions of increasing responsibility.
Ms. Panzera received her B. S. in Information Technology Management from the University of Tampa and is a certified clinical research associate through the Association of Clinical Research Associates (ACRP).


Alfred K. Mbah, Ph.D., Statistician I

Dr. Alfred Mbah joined BSI, Inc. in 2007 from the Department of Statistics, College of Arts and Science at the University of South Florida (USF) after graduating with both statistical degrees Master of Science (2006) and a Ph.D. in (2007).
Teaching projects at USF included Finite Mathematics, College Algebra, Pre-calculus Trigonometry, Basic and Introductory Statistics, Time Series Analysis and Introduction to Probability. Dr. Mbah was awarded the Tharpe Endowed Award, USF Mathematics Department, from 2002 to 2006 and has Master degrees in biostatistics and applied statistics (Limburgs Universitair Centrum, Belgium), mathematics from both the University of Ibadan, Nigeria and the University of Jos, Nigeria.

Previously, Dr. Mbah taught Finite Mathematics at the University of Dschang, Cameroon and assisted students at the University of Yaounde, Cameroon. During an internship at the Department of Statistics, University of Leiden, Netherlands he was responsible for data cleaning and analyzing data from patients with phenylketonuria (PKU) by building a longitudinal model with length growth as a dependent variable and several predictors like protein concentration.
Dr. Mbah has published several works in maternal and fetal-infant morbidity, cancer and power function distribution based on lower generalized order statistics including a paper on statistical relationships of storm runoff in Californian urban watersheds.

Unpublished works include theory and application of cluster analysis, longitudinal data analysis of length growth of patients with phenylketonuria (PKU), and a Phase III clinical trial study involving patients with breast cancer to determine whether relapse or death can be prevented if patients are switched from Tamoxifen to Antiaromatase treatment.

Elena V. Valkanova, M.S., M.A. , Programmer

Ms. Valkanova joined BSI, Inc. in 2005 from the Department of Mathematics, at the University of South Florida (USF) after graduating with a Master of Arts in Mathematics (2004). She was awarded a Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, USF in 2009. She was a teaching assistant at USF from 2001 to 2005, and taught courses in Liberal Arts, Precalculus Algebra, Trigonometry, and Business Calculus.
Elena was awarded with the Thard Endowed Award from Department of Mathematics, USF for the period of 2001-2004.
She also has Master and Bachelor degrees in Mathematics and Informatics both from the University of Sofia, Bulgaria. Previously, Elena was a teaching associate at the Schools of Europe, Sofia, Bulgaria and coordinated, involved in the logistics in the educational programs. She also taught students to attend mathematical modeling competitions. While employed at Comco, Ltd., in Sofia, Bulgaria Elena developed management system software; designing and analyzing modules to optimize transport expeditions.
Since joining BSI, Ms. Valkanova has been responsible for database design within the BSI Data Management System, and SAS programming in support of data management and biostatistics. She also manages the updates to the BSI website and BSI Secure-Link, and is the primary liaison between SUG and SESUG and BSI as it pertains to SAS software use and internal training.

Ms. Valkanova has published several papers including algorithms in stochastic games, valuation formulas for American compound options (seminar series in Applied Mathematics and Finance), and SAS programming within the CDISC Model for ODM as part of attending the annual Southeast SAS Users Group (SESUG) conferences.
